The steel industry is in the midst of a transition process, where the focus on CO2 reduction and improvements in environmental impact is playing an increasingly important role throughout the value chain. At Tibnor, we are working on specific measures aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in the supply chain and in our own operations.

At Tibnor, we are, among other things, sourcing a high  proportion of materials from Nordic suppliers, which has reduced transport distances and improved the ability to document the environmental impact of the materials through available EPDs.

- Our goal is to support development in the industry through concrete initiatives. Among other things, we offer the product SSAB ZeroTM, which is produced with recycled steel and electricity from fossil-free energy sources. This results in a carbon footprint that, according to EPDs for production, is very low compared to conventional steel. In addition, we have launched a training programme to certify our sales staff throughout the Nordic region in sustainability, says Tobias Svensson, Head of Supply Chain  and Operations at Tibnor.

As part of this effort, Tibnor has also recently hired a Sustainability Specialist responsible for ensuring that data and documentation for the company's climate-related initiatives are valid and up to date. 

Purchasing with a focus on documented low environmental impact

Around 95% of the environmental impact of Tibnor's operations occurs at the manufacturers. For this reason, Tibnor has for several years prioritised suppliers who can document a lower climate footprint.

Today, around two-thirds of Tibnor’s purchased materials come from Nordic suppliers. This approach not only helps reduce emissions from transport but also ensures access to EPDs and other relevant environmental documentation.

- We are seeing more customers demanding documentation of the climate footprint of products. That is why we are increasingly choosing reliable suppliers with high environmental standards – suppliers that we know and trust, often within the Nordics and Europe, where transparency and quality requirements are high. This gives us access to trustworthy EPDs and helps us make more informed choices. Only in cases where materials are not available within the EU do we source from elsewhere, says Tobias Svensson.

Focus on documentation and responsible communication

Together with its parent company SSAB, Tibnor has focused on working purposefully with more environmental friendly steel solutions that can be documented and make a real difference in practice.

- We are seeing a growing demand for steel products with documented lower emissions. Our ambition is to contribute to this development with measures that can be verified by independent parties, and we are therefore working continuously to collect and validate data for our products and processes, says Tobias Svensson.

Tibnor regards its work on climate and documentation as a long-term process, in which we continuously review our initiatives and communication in line with market developments and new requirements from customers and authorities.
